Brian Eno 's label, Opal, picked up Hugo Largo Hugo Largo - Mettle their second album, and on one hand the songs are closer to pop or a weird art-school version thereofyet on the other, the skill and emotional range of the band has broadened considerably. The menace of "Hot Day" abuts the beauty of "Jungle Jim" and the playfulness of "Turtle Song" the one single from the album, bearing bonus tracks that should have been reissued.

Mimi Goese draws out one word, then another, making musical loop-de-loops with the syllables, causing the listener to hang on every word for some sort of meaning. One Hugo Largo - Mettle what could have come out if the group had continued, but Mettle is satisfying enough as an epitaph. AllMusic relies heavily on JavaScript. You won't walk away whistling anything from Mettle. The result is an album that takes us to someplace where we can look back on our everyday lives and emotions with fresh but strangely detached eyes, In the process, Mettle doesn't replace that connection with much of anything/5(7).

Aug 13,  · Hugo Largo's Mettle is haunting, innovative, different and an album that, try as i might, i can't sink into. 2 bass players and a violinist provide the musical backing whilst the voice of Mimi Goese floats and soars below, above, and beyond/5(12).

Dec 08,  · After having spent a considerable sum on purchasing this hard-to-find version solely for the bonus tracks not found on any other CD edition, I must say they did a poor job of cleaning up the noise on those two songs which are obviously recorded from the vinyl record, with no apparent attempt to remove the crackle and pops which are annoyingly audible/5(2).
