As everyone knows, Becker was tragically diagnosed with ALS prior to the recording of the album and was unable to tour in support of it. Dave and the band wanted to put out a ballsy rock record and take the world by storm. The problem was, more or less, timing, rather than lack of good songs.
Byhowever, this style of music, and Dave himself, were starting to be seen as stale. Even before the grunge era, audiences were yearning for something new. When Nirvana and Pearl Jam blew-up later in the year, Dave and all he was associated with were seen as passe. Listen to that short clip below. Jason Becker then only 21 years old! Obrecht, of course, was no stranger in Van Halen circles.
The veteran writer gave Eddie his first magazine interview. It was great because they were just like normal people. They are about the nicest guys I have ever met — you know, the guys in the band.
They just really made it easy. It was really easy. It was just a matter of going and playing. Oh, yeah. I learned the songs the way I Will Be A Good Boy - Gang Of Four - Songs Of The Free songs were on the records.
So they just wanted to make sure I could cop the vibes. Gosh, lots of different people wrote on the record. Steve Hunter wrote quite Babys On Fire - David Lee Roth - A Little Aint Enough few tunes with the keyboard player, Brett Tuggle.
You know, Dave writes the lyrics for the tunes. So I kind of filled in the gaps. It was really cool! It was really mellow, really easy.
Bob Rock produced it. Bob Rock! We did a demo of some of the songs before we went in, up to Vancouver to record. And a lot of the solos I did on that, I sort of winged them and made them up at the time. But that was cool, because they came out good. But the recording, it was just loads of fun. My favorites change every day. There are little parts in each song that I like. Especially those. My other records are pretty much blaze from start to finish, and I love doing that, but I wanted it to be a little more.

I got there and I was expecting. H.P.

Yeah, definitely. You know, most of the songs were written when I got in the band. Do you have songwriting credits on other songs? What were the sessions like when you went in to record? What are your favorite tracks on the album?
You sure had a chance to do some fire-breathing solos on this record. Yeah, I got a chance. I got a chance to blaze on the last couple. Submit a Tip or Story Idea.
