Murray Horwitz. The CD Night Lights - Gerry Mulligan - Night Lights called Night Lights. The most famous were the quartets with trumpeter Chet Baker. But for my money, the best are DJ Promo* - Rockin With The Best sextets featuring the valve trombonist and composer Bob Brookmeyer.

To my ears, not having a piano makes the harmonies more transparent, and puts even more emphasis on the musicians listening and playing together. It's reminiscent of the best chamber music, and the sound they called it back then: cool. B, "butter and cream, rich sound" with an irresistible Latin feel. It's a Chopin prelude. It's kind of like Poland meets Brazil. Everything is subtle and softly swinging. This is just very beautiful music. It's on the Mercury label.

The Title song, Night Lights was written by Gerry Mulligan. It is a fine start and finish, shining brightly over the other tunes. Recorded over 40 years ago, this CD is as crisp, inviting and good to listen to, as if the musicians had just stepped out of the recording studio.

Gorgeous arrangements played by a well rehearsed and accomplished group of musicians are found in this revival of the Mulligan sextet. The addition of Jim Hall on guitar gives this group a different feel from an earlier sextet with Zoot Sims on tenor.
