Finding good children's music has become such a dispiriting experience: the stuff on the racks is either a crass product tie-ins, a cheaply produced compilation, a gratingly saccharin moralizing, or all of the above. John Lithgow has single-handedly redeemed the children's music section with this release, Singin' in the Bathtubwhich revisits the classic songs that he and his siblings grew up with. It's bright and cheerful enough that kids love it, and even more miraculously, it's clever enough that parents Magic Flute, Overture, K 620 - The St.

There's no scrimping on production values, either -- perfectly sunny big band backings on "Everybody Eats When They Come to My House," wry cocktail party piano on "I'm a Gnu," and a hauntingly beautiful children's choir on "Inchworm.

"Singing in the Bathtub" is a song written in by Michael H. Cleary, with lyrics by Herb Magidson and Ned Washington for the film The Show of Shows. The Show of Shows was Warner Bros.' answer to MGM's The Hollywood Revue of , and "Singing in the Bathtub" spoofs Hollywood Revue's song "Singin' in the Rain".

But the other songs are fabulous. The Hippopotamus song along is worth the price of the full disc: "Mud, mud, glorious mud!" Lithgow isn't a virtuoso singer. If you're looking for an album with vocal excellence, try Perry Como (whose "A You're Adorable" put me to sleep). But Lithgow brings a /5().
